OAMARU VICTORIAN HERITAGE FETE DAY  2014

Sunday, November 16

“To rouse the spirit of the earth, And move the rolling sky.” Fairport Convention

They walked, they talked, they ate…..   they shopped, they chopped, they sang, they played, they swirled – in gorgeous skirts, in kilts, ate some more…..   retrieved their hats from the robust North Otago breezy gusts, posed, photoed, and ate some more…..

OAMARU VICTORIAN HERITAGE CELEBRATIONS 2014

FIRST CLASS PASSENGERS BALL

Friday, November 14, 2014

ARRIVALS to the ball at the Scottish Hall in Oamaru’s Tyne Street looked shipshape – sharp and polished, gorgeous and glamorous, and their arrival was heralded by a tribute flare from visiting hot air balloonists.

The excited passengers were eager to set sail for a night of dancing, chatting, and enjoying refreshments, music, camararderie, and maybe even romance.

I’ll just let the photos speak for themselves.  Enjoy the trip!

VICTORIAN GARDEN PARTY, Oamaru Public Gardens Band Rotunda

WHILE the band played on, participants strolled, chatted, played croquet, nibbled on delicate cucumber sandwiches, and sipped tea poured from a silver service.

The sun shone, the gardens looked lovely, guests were beautifully-attired, the atmosphere was warm and convivial, and for once the infamous ever-present Oamaru “breeze” didn’t play havoc with everyone’s hats and hair.

This event was most assuredly one of the highlights of the week.  Long may it continue.

WHEELS, WIND, WIZARDS, AND WONDER – OAMARU HERITAGE FEST 2014

Wednesday, November 19, 2014

BY TRISH FRANCES JARDINE

For some its back in civvies until next year, and for others, dressing “weird” and/or historic is an ongoing lifestyle.

Last week those with a passion for history, dressing up, costumes, and fancy and wacky dress, and interesting and crazy machines, got to indulge their fantasies at Oamaru, New Zealand’s, annual Victorian Heritage Celebrations from last Wednesday until end of Sunday.

Thousands of people from Oamaru, and near and far away, attended the myriad of events over the five-day festival, and a jolly good time was had by all.  The atmosphere was vibrant, friendly, fun and exciting.  Everything a good festival should be.

The theme this year was “Transportation”, and every kind of wild or retro or vintage machine that was available was dusted off and trotted out, including even a horse or two.

A spokesperson for Waitaki District Council said 88 percent of tickets to events were sold this year, that’s 969 tickets out of the 1100 printed.

Sadly, that’s it for another year.  Over the next few Posts (more to come), starting here with the Opening Ceremony, I will be featuring some of the styles and events that made last week special.  It…….was……incredible!  🙂

Roll on next November.

P.S.  Next year’s theme is “Alice In Wonderland”.

OPENING CEREMONY, THAMES STREET COUNCIL CHAMBERS STEPS, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2014
